Retail: products visible to AI assistants, ad budget held back

Tested

AI advertising measured against real orders, then paused on the evidence

Challenge

A retailer was encouraged to connect its store to an AI assistant's new advertising product. The promise was a new sales channel.

The tools were only weeks old. The retailer already had a product feed and tracking that worked, and did not want to disturb them for something unproven.

Approach

We separated the two parts of the offer: being listed, and paying to be promoted.

  • Publish the catalog to the assistant using the feed the retailer already trusted.
  • Run the paid advertising as a small test with a fixed end date.
  • Measure the result against orders in the store, not the platform's own report.
  • Diagnose the faults in the new connection app and report them.
  • Recommend a decision from the evidence.

Result

The products are present in the assistant's answers. The advertising did not pay for itself, so the retailer paused it.

  • A presence in AI answers without ongoing spend.
  • The existing feed and tracking left intact.
  • A date set to test again as the tools mature.

Our advice

With any new advertising channel, decide in advance what result would justify continuing. It makes the decision to stop an easy one.
