Commercial equipment: a touchscreen interface reviewed for speed

Reviewed

an embedded touchscreen interface, with performance findings and fixes

Challenge

A manufacturer of commercial equipment had built a touchscreen control interface for a new product. It was well engineered, and it responded more slowly than the company wanted.

The interface used web technology running on small embedded hardware, with components from more than one supplier, so it was not obvious where the delay came from.

Approach

We were engaged to evaluate the interface for performance, fix what could be fixed and recommend improvements.

  • Meet the engineering team and learn how the interface was put together.
  • Test each layer separately: the interface code, the display software and the hardware.
  • Work with the display software's supplier on the faults found there.
  • Correct performance problems in the interface code where possible.
  • Write up the findings and recommendations for the engineering team.

Result

The company received a written review that identified where the delays arose and what to change.

  • Problems traced to the layer responsible.
  • Fixes made during the engagement.
  • Recommendations for the next hardware version.

Our advice

When several suppliers share a product, a slow screen is everybody's and nobody's problem. An independent review settles where it lies.
